Description

(Somewhere in Chapter 2)...

He raised an eyebrow and grumbled, “What?”

Wanna talk about what’s bothering you?” she asked with concern in her eyes.

He narrowed his eyes at her, “And what makes you think something’s bothering me?”

She didn't shy away from his glare. “You just look like a lot happened tonight. If you don’t wanna talk that’s fine. Just know that I’m here for you, Damion,” she said in a soft voice as she sat, patiently, next to him.

Those words warmed his chest as he bent over to put his elbows on his knees, while he kept taking deep breaths. Sophie must have felt his stress increase and decided to cautiously scoot closer to him, and began to gently thread her fingers through his thick black hair, sometimes touching the tip of his pointed, pierced ears as she waited to see if he would talk. Damion relished the feel of her small fingers in his hair. Oh how it smoothed his inner turmoil as he began to talk about the events that happened tonight. When he finished, he didn’t expect to be encased in loving arms as tears started to fall onto his cheek. Looking up he saw Sophie crying as she held him close.

“Oh Damion, I’m so sorry.”

“... Why do you apologize? I am just a heartless bastard.” His eyes furrowed as he tried to understand why she was upset.

"Don't call yourself that!"

"No, Sophie," he interrupted as he firmly pressed her hand against his hollow chest. He saw the realization in her rounding eyes as she understood. "This is what I will always be."

“Don’t you dare say that, Damion! You’re good and I know it!”

His brows furrowed more at her claim, “Why does it matter to you?”

Her eyes held a sliver of hurt for a moment before they filled with kindness again. “Isn’t it obvious? I’m your friend.” She gently threaded her free hand through his long bangs to show more of his face.

The demon’s head tilted slightly as he tried to understand the unfamiliar word, “Friend?”

She nodded her head at his question, “Yes. Even though I’ve only been here for week, I would like to think that we are friends. I’ve seen so many different sides to you Damion and it breaks my heart when people treat you like a monster, when you’re not.” Another tear fell from her cheek and landed on his. “Haven’t you ever had someone to call your friend?”

He blinked slowly, as he searched his memories, before looking up at her with intense eyes, “Never.” His voice was so hollow when he answered; like a broken soul.

His answer made Sophie’s eyes water more. Her lips pressed together as she tried to keep herself from sobbing on him. He didn’t need that. But, what he did need, she gave with a heart-warming smile, “Well, you do now. And I’m glad to have a friend like you in my life.” She leaned in again as she put everything she had into her hug, showing Damion that there was someone that cared about him.

I really feel I should ask this. Are the soul collectors like the IRS or something. Everyone knows about them and just accepts them like 'oh, the soul collectors went to the Martin's last week'. Is it really that normal? It'd make more sense if Soul collectors were invisible to everyone but the dying. Sure, it'd make his meeting with Sophie a bit difficult but it'd make more sense in a practical sense since they wouldn't have to fight and get past the relatives of the dying every time they did their job.
