Ch.12 My wish...

Description

(somewhere in chapter 12)...

She quickly turned around and said, “Close your eyes!”

He jerked his head back a little, “What?!”

“Come on, it’s tradition, close your eyes,” she cooed at him.

Obviously, it was something he had said that triggered this reaction. ‘Why?! Why did I open my damn mouth!?’ He pouted, but did as she asked. Though he did crack open an eye when she began to bend over again to retrieve something. He contemplated whether or not he should pinch her finely shaped backside for revenge for this morning as he stared at it hungrily… But, he lost that opportunity when she sat up again. He closed his eye, again, as he waited to see what she had planned. He could tell that she was turning the lamp off and was sitting in front of him now. Damion could smell something sweet and heard the striking of a match. ‘What are you up to?’

“Okay you can open your eyes now.”

When he did, he saw a cupcake with a single candle, lit, on it, being cradled in her hands as she presented it to him.

“I wanted to make your first birthday celebration one to remember. I know it isn’t much, but I still want you to make a wish on your birthday.”

His eyes softened then. “How do you do that?”

She looked at him curiously, “Do what?”

He leaned his head against hers, “Make me feel alive?”

Her cheeks turned rosy as she threaded her fingers through his hair, “Because you make me feel the same way.” She gave him a peck on the forehead. “Now… make a wish,” she chirped as she presented the little cake again.

He cocked an eyebrow at that. “Does it actually work?”

Kinda. Don’t laugh, but when I was little I wished for a pony on my birthday… I got a wood carving of a pony from Oliver, instead. But I loved it so much.”

“Then it doesn’t work?”

She chuckled at him as he tried to understand. “I wouldn’t say that. My last wish did come true.”

“What did you wish for?”

She locked her green eyes with his. “I wished that someone would find me and take me away from that place… and here I am now, with my dark warrior who came and rescued me.”

A corner of his lips twitched into that charming smirk of his. He almost said his wish out loud before Sophie covered his lips. “Wait, you can’t say it out loud or you’ll ruin your wish.”

If he could, he’d tell her to ‘make up your mind’ but, decided against it. He thought about it carefully before he blew out the candle, making the room become shrouded in darkness, as wisps of smoke danced off the fading ember.

Alright, as usual, I will start with the bad. First off the anatomy is off in certain areas such as the fingers on Damion, the ears on both, and the jaw on Sophie. Secondly, there are several mistakes throughout the work in the line work and shading. And finally, the light source expands too far, creating a sense that the candle light is actually bending around them.

Now for the good. The details are significantly abundant, showing that time had been taken to make sure the details stood out. The aura around the characters makes for a sense of privacy; an "alone time moment" if you will. The overall image creates an atmosphere that provides a "warmth" and passion and love to the scene. And to finish off, the shadowing creates an effect as though they are small children experiencing their first moment of significance together.
